Aerial view of Cornelius, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County

Fence the yard without fencing out the water.

On a Cornelius lot the view is most of what the house is worth, and a solid six foot line across the wrong side of it is an expensive mistake.

The fence that keeps the view

Almost every lake side job here comes down to the same decision. You want the dog in, the kids in, and possibly the pool enclosed, and you do not want to look at a wall while you are doing it.

Black aluminum is the usual answer on the water side. At any distance the pickets stop reading as a fence and the view goes straight through them. Split rail with wire mesh on the inside face does the same job for less money and a more rural look, which suits the deeper lots.

Then privacy goes only where it earns its place, which is normally one side line and the road frontage. Fencing the whole property in board because the back needed it is the most common way people spend more and end up happier with less.

Pools, and the rules that come with them

A lot of the fencing here is pool fencing, and a pool fence is a code item that gets inspected. Height, the gap under the bottom rail, the spacing between pickets, which way the gate swings and whether the latch closes itself are all specified.

One customer in a time crunch to pass a homeowners insurance inspection wrote afterwards that our knowledge of pool fencing requirements was incredibly helpful. That knowledge lives mostly in the gate hardware, which is where a good looking fence usually fails an inspection.

Tell us it is a pool on the first call. It changes the specification from the start rather than after somebody has walked around it with a clipboard.

Slope, and running a line down to water

Lake lots fall, and often they fall hardest right where you want the fence. Two honest options exist. Rack the panels so the top of the fence follows the grade, which looks natural and keeps the bottom tight to the ground. Or step them, so each section is level and the height changes at the post, which looks more formal and leaves triangular gaps at the bottom unless they are dealt with.

Those gaps matter if you have a dog. On a stepped run down a bank we close them rather than leaving them, which is a detail that costs a little and saves a phone call.

Aluminum racks a limited amount before it stops, so we work out which sections rack and which step before anything is ordered, not on the day the truck arrives.

I got multiple quotes, and he was the best priced as well. What I am most impressed with is that they put a screw hole in one of my posts backwards when installing a gate. Instead of just leaving the screw in, they removed the entire post and put a brand new one in. As a contractor myself I wish all of my crews would take a thought to quality like that.

If you're looking for high quality fencing, with superior craftsmanship, for a fair price, then look no further. I am an absolute perfectionist when building. These guys met every expectation and then some. They showed up on time, worked hard, cleaned up their work areas daily, and completed the job within my expectations.

Nick's Fencing was a lifesaver. They fixed a fence that had been installed incorrectly by another company, something many companies wouldn't even give us a quote to repair. Nick came out on a Sunday, was extremely responsive, professional, and truly went above and beyond to make sure everything was done correctly.

We had gotten five quotes from various fencing companies in the area and signed a quote with two of those companies who then did not show up or return our calls to install. Nick was installing a neighbor's fence so I asked him for a quote and he showed up within a few weeks and installed in basically one day. Fence looks great and quality is top-notch.

Nick and his crew made quick work of our old fence in just a few short hours. Within 2 short days later we had a fence to our liking and our very active German Shepherd Olive loves the new fence. All of his crew were very respectful and did great work. Pricing is very fair.

We were in a time crunch to pass homeowners insurance inspection. He graciously came out the next day to quote and his team fit us in within that first week. Without direction, they saved landscaped bushes and worked around them. I appreciated watching his team examine the fence slats to ensure there was no warping. His knowledge about pool fencing requirements was incredibly helpful.

Black aluminum stops reading as a fence at any distance. Split rail with mesh on the inside face does a similar job for less money with a more rural look.

Yes, built to the height, picket gap, bottom clearance and self closing gate hardware an inspection wants. Say it is a pool on the first call so it is specified that way from the start.

Either racked so the top follows the grade, or stepped so each section is level. We walk it with you and show you which one your slope suits.

It will if nobody deals with them. On a stepped run down a bank we close them, which matters if you have a dog.

It is usually the smart plan here. Privacy where you need it, something transparent where the view is.
