A wood fence is only as good as the posts under it.

The layout happens before anything gets dug

The first visit is spent walking the line with you, not measuring it from the driveway. Where the gate goes decides how you get a mower into the back yard for the next twenty years. Where the fence meets the house decides whether you can still open a basement window. And where the line sits relative to the property pin decides whether a neighbor has a conversation with you about it in two years.

We mark the run, count the panels, and tell you where a section is going to have to step because the ground drops. On a yard with real fall you either rack the panels so the top follows the grade, or you step them so each section stays level and the height changes at the post. Both look fine. They look completely different, they cost different amounts, and picking one after the holes are dug is how people end up unhappy.

One customer wrote that we made a recommendation that changed what she was thinking for her fence and made all the difference in the yard. That is what the walk is for. You are allowed to change your mind, and the cheapest time to do it is while we are both standing in the grass.

Posts, concrete and the part nobody photographs

A pressure treated post in Iredell County red clay is fighting two things: water that sits in the hole and frost that lifts it. The hole goes deeper than the panel needs, the post goes in plumb, and the concrete gets a crown on it so water runs away from the wood instead of pooling around it. That crown takes ten extra seconds a hole and it is the single cheapest thing anyone can do to make a fence last.

Spacing matters as much as depth. Stretch the posts out and you save money on posts and lose it on the rails, which start to bow in the middle where nothing holds them. Corner and gate posts carry more load than a line post ever will, so they get treated differently rather than being another hole in the row.

Then it sits. Rail and pickets going on a green post is how a fence ends up leaning a season later, and it is one of the more common things we get called out to fix on somebody else's work.

Privacy, shadowbox and picket, and what changes between them

A privacy fence is boards butted tight on one side of the rail. It gives you the most screening, it is the heaviest thing to hang, and it takes the most wind. A shadowbox alternates boards front and back, so from a distance it still screens, but air moves through it and it looks the same from both sides. If you and your neighbor are splitting a line, shadowbox is usually the easier conversation.

Picket and ranch rail are containment rather than screening. They hold a dog in, they mark a boundary, and they keep the view. A lot of Lake Norman yards want privacy across the back and something lower down the sides so the yard does not feel like a box.

Board quality is where the money quietly hides. One customer wrote that he watched the crew examine the fence slats to make sure there was no warping before they went up. A bowed picket looks fine on the trailer and looks terrible six feet up in a straight run, and the only way to keep it out is for somebody to be looking.

Removal, cleanup and the walk at the end

If there is an old fence, it comes out first. Posts get pulled rather than snapped off at grade, holes get filled, and the old panels leave on the trailer the same day rather than living in a pile beside the driveway until somebody remembers them. Old fence removal is one of the things customers mention on our Google profile by name.

Dig spoil gets raked back rather than left in ridges, and offcuts and screws come up off the grass before we leave. One review says the crew cleaned their work areas daily. That is not a policy we wrote down, it is just that a yard you are still living in should be usable at six o'clock.

The last thing that happens is a walk with you. Gates get swung, latches get worked, and anything you point at gets dealt with while the tools are still here. Somebody wrote that we pulled an entire post and put a new one in because a screw hole had gone in backwards on a gate. That is the standard the walk is held to.
