Two different towns, two different fences.
The older streets near the courthouse want one thing and the land out past the interstate wants another, and quoting them the same way is how people end up with the wrong fence.
In town: older fences, older lines
The streets around the center of town have fences on them that are decades old, and a good share of our work here is replacing or repairing rather than starting from nothing. That is a different job. There is an existing line, an existing height, and usually a neighbor who has an opinion about both.
Old posts get pulled rather than snapped off at grade, because a snapped post is a rotten stub in the ground exactly where the new post wants to go. Holes get filled, the old panels leave the same day, and the yard is usable that evening.
Where we are patching rather than replacing, matching matters. Board width, picket spacing and rail height come off the existing fence, and we say up front that new wood sits lighter than weathered wood for a season or two.
Out of town: acreage and what it costs
Past the interstate the lots open up and the fence changes completely. Split rail, ranch rail and deer fencing, priced by the foot, with the ground doing most of the arguing about what that price is.
Acreage is where an estimate written from a satellite photo goes wrong. Rock, a wet corner, an old fence line half buried in a hedge, and a bank that falls away faster than any panel will rack are all invisible from above and all expensive on the day.
So the walk is the estimate. It takes longer and it is the only way to give you a number that still means something in week two.
Repairs, including other people's work
A good share of the repair calls we take are fences somebody else built. Posts set too shallow, no concrete in the hole, spacing stretched too far so the rails bow, or a gate hung on a line post that was never going to carry it.
That work is harder to quote than a new fence and plenty of companies will not look at it. One customer wrote that their fence had been installed incorrectly by another company, that many companies would not even quote the repair, and that we came out on a Sunday to look at it.
Sometimes the honest answer is that the original install cannot be saved. We would rather say that and give you a real number than take money for a patch that fails again next year.
