Roots, and why they change the price
The tree canopy is the best thing about the older streets here and the hardest thing about digging in them. A mature oak puts structural roots a long way out, and hitting one is not a matter of pushing through it. Cutting a major root to place a post can take the tree down over the following few years, which is a much bigger loss than moving a post eighteen inches.
So on a treed lot we walk the line looking up as much as down, and we plan post positions around what is there. Sometimes that means an uneven bay in the run. An uneven bay is a compromise. A dead oak is a disaster.
It also affects the estimate honestly. A line through open lawn and a line threading a root plate are not the same job, and pricing them the same is how somebody ends up with a bad surprise halfway through.
Fences that fit an older street
On the newer edges of town six foot board is normal and nobody blinks. Closer to the college, on the older grid, a tall solid fence across a front or side line can look like it landed from somewhere else. Picket, split rail and lower board are usually the better fit, with the privacy kept to the back of the lot where it is actually needed.
A common plan here is a solid run across the rear boundary and something lower down both sides, so the yard is private where you sit and open where the street sees it. It costs less than fencing the whole lot in board and it looks like it belongs.
If you want a view kept, black aluminum reads as almost nothing at any distance and holds a dog perfectly well.
Property lines on a narrow lot
Older lots have older lines, and the fence that is already there is not always on one. On a narrow lot a few inches matters, both to your neighbor and to whoever buys either house next.

Where a line is shared, shadowbox is usually the easiest fence to agree on, because it looks the same from both sides and neither neighbor is looking at the rails.
